Leon:I have the immense privilege of hanging out with him and and Samantha recently when they were in town for the Cassandra Miller piece.

Leon:At the LSM. Man, that was such a good show. That was really, really incredible, and it was wonderful to to catch up with Mark and meet Samantha.
Justin:How did that version compare to the
Leon:It's beautiful. I mean, I didn't quite understand, but it is only this piece is only played by Lawrence Power, by the by the altist commissioned it. So he's he's basically yeah. He's touring it. Wow.
Leon:And the OSM is like, you know, I haven't seen them since I was like 16 or something. That was probably the last time last time I've been in a concert hall like that. They're tight as fuck.
Jakub:Yeah. They're
Leon:they're a good band.
Jakub:Yeah. They're
Leon:a fucking good band. Everything about it was phenomenal. And also just like the hall is a really, really beautiful hall, a really beautiful place to to hear music in. That was, like, an amazing experience. But, yes, that version was maybe not a slightly less raw, I find, than of the version that you you played on the show.
Leon:I think a lot of it has to do with touring Mhmm. The piece. But that, I guess, becomes part of the

Leon:process also. But it was it was really, really beautiful to hear it in in person.
Justin:So sad I missed this. I was supposed to be there too, but I had a a job to do in a in a faraway city, so I got taken away by work. But what a bummer. That's but incredible for you guys. And, also, I remember seeing the OSM during the Kent Negano era.
Justin:Yeah. Yeah. And and with because they did a lot of Messian back then because he was a big Messian guy and went and saw some Messian, and it was pretty, very polished. Very

Leon:I mean, it's it's like, you know, they've they're they're good at what they do and everything, and they might be a little polite, but I haven't heard this.

Justin:And that it's also really there's so many incredible stories about this record. Like, it's my favorite guitar playing ever. And, like, and it's John McLaughlin who I don't like normally, and I spent years trying to find a John McLaughlin record that sounded like that. And there aren't any. It's Keith Jarrett on electric piano.
Justin:I fucking hate Keith Jarrett, and I can't stand Keith Jarrett. And it's, like, the best electric piano player. And, apparently, it's because he fucking hated the the Rhodes so much that he wanted to murder it. Like and he was just super angry playing it and, like, hitting the keys super hard. You get this crazy distortion.
Leon:Yeah.
Justin:It's so sick. And that, like, that last little section, like, where it's the guitar and the and the Rhodes, and, like, I don't even know which instrument's which. Like, it's so magical. And the also Michael Henderson on bass, and that's really a crazy story because Michael Henderson is, I think, like, 15 or 16 at this point. Yeah.
Justin:And and he was playing with, I think, Stevie Wonder's band, and Miles just walked into the dressing room of Stevie's. And he's like, who's the bass player? And and Stevie was like, oh, it's Michael Henderson. He's like, I'm taking him. And he just took him out of the room and, like, took him on tour with him.
Jakub:That's amazing.
Justin:This is the as so the story goes. But, yeah, pretty pretty heavy record. Like, that's just
Leon:Yeah.
Justin:So insane. And it's a bit of a truncated version, but it gets I love it because up until that point, there's nothing noodly, and it's just super heavy and super focused, and it gets a bit noodly after that. But, yeah, it's pretty pretty incredible music. So little summer heavy summer. Yeah.

And then this is what I want my listeners to feel. You know? What it's like to get in a car and just turn on some music and drive. You know?
Jakub:It's a great kind of I love these kind of, you know, take backs on on experiences you've had or something like that and make make that the vehicle of, like, your creative kind of, you know, inspiration.
Justin:Do you guys know that do you guys know that a k Paul, Jay Paul's brother, released that seven inch Land Cruiser? And I wonder if it was a riff or, like, a it's a great track. It was, like, the the first after all the Jay Paul stuff happened, like, it was the first track that that kind of was released by that crew to kind of build on the hype, and it didn't really go very far. But it was a great track. But it was named Land Cruise, then I was always like, what's that about?
Justin:And I wonder if it was a tip to this on some level.

Justin:Finally figured out what it was, bought the album, and it has become the effectively the New Year's Eve ball in New York's in New York's time for me. Like, every I had a after hours bar that I ran out of my house, and we did New Year's parties. And then New Year's Eve, this would be at midnight, that would drop. At the bar I owned, at midnight, that would drop. It's the it's it only, unfortunately, becomes more and more appropriate as every year passes, which is a real bummer.
Justin:I just only wish it was someone other than Elon Musk who was trying to take us to space because now what are we gonna do? We have to go with Drexi and go underwater.

And, basically, the track obviously, if I could find it again, it was pretty sweet. The, the comment that somebody made. Yeah.

Leon:So it was like EQ'd the hell out. Yeah. And so it's hard to know what was real and what wasn't. But
Justin:Yeah. And and, I mean, also the like, I mean, just this album, if you haven't heard it, it's a double album. It is one of the great cosmological jazz, like, cosmic jazz records. Like, all the way through, it's insane. It kind of has this, like, total Afrofuturist vision.
Justin:Like, it's so under respected and under heralded. Like, to me, it's as, like, as powerful as anything Sun Ra did, like, as a whole album, and it's really it's, like, it's super visionary. And I think probably the reason it doesn't get the credit is because, like, jazz organ is such a niche. Like, it's kind of like it's it's a looked down upon Sure. Part of the canon, and it doesn't have the respect that, like, free jazz has or whatever.
Justin:So but damn, this record is genius, like, all the way through. It's so so incredible.
Leon:So Charles Erland is a Organist. An organist. Yes. Okay.
Justin:Most famously, he's like Groove Holmes or, like, brother Jack McDuff. Like, he's like one of these, like, total, like, famous funky funky organ combo kinda players. But, man, so next level. So next level. I mean, those guys are great too.
Justin:Respect all the way around, but it's like he's just like, I I particularly love that genre of music anyways, but as as someone that loves many genres, he's, like, transcendent. You know? It's like
Jakub:That track has has such great swag to it. It's got such a great rhythm to it. It's amazing.

Justin:What's the story of you guys knowing him again?
Leon:So I think we were looking for someone to master some of our tracks, me and Jacob. Yeah. And Karina, Cyan, CMD, told us that mister Day offered mastery for a really, really No money. Very basement bargain bin, like, super, you know, I've gone crazy. I sold the store kinda price range.
Leon:And, yeah, she she had his contact because I think they whenever she goes to the I I don't know what it's called. I think it's called Movement now, the the Detroit electronic she always hits up the off the off festival parties, and mister Day and the electro funk crew always throw the best parties. And so she got to know him through that. I mean, despite on top of the fact that he's like, you know, an OG I mean, was he's basically who got DJ assault on the map. Was was Ade.
Leon:Yeah. So she she gave us his contact, and and we we contacted him, and and we got some stuff mastered through him. Yeah. And I sub we subsequently got some other stuff mastered by him as well. Super, super nice guy.
Jakub:Yeah. My first interaction with him was amazing because I I wrote an email to him, like, we wanna get mastered. He's like, give me your and he just wrote, like, give me your phone number. I'll call you. And I was like, oh, okay.
Jakub:So he called me. He's like, yo, Jacob. This is sad day, man. I'm like, hey. He's like, so what do you want?
Jakub:You wanna boo me? You wanna boo me? I was like, yeah. We don't wanna boo me. He's like, okay.
Jakub:Well, just remember one thing, Jacob. You gotta keep it funky. Whatever you do, you gotta keep it funky. And I was like, okay, man. He was really a sweetheart this dude to talk to and be in touch with.
Leon:It was amazing.
Justin:That's pretty summer. That's pretty great.
Jakub:Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And he does these great like, he just produced all these, you know, like, hip hop albums and and, like, DJ Soft and, like, techno albums. And then he makes these amazing super soulful, like, live live band tracks.
Jakub:So it's pretty cool.
Justin:It looks like I was just looking at this guy. It looks like he put out a double l p, like, two years ago. I'd like to check
Jakub:it out.
Justin:It's interesting.
Leon:Yeah, not surprising. I mean, it's nonstop.
Jakub:Yeah, there's a great documentary that they made of him about it. That's pretty great. I forget what it's called, but it's like French French documentary team that went to Detroit and made a documentary on it.
Leon:Yeah. It's it's it's actually it's like a classic. It was super super good documentary. I think it's a day in the life.
Jakub:Oh, yeah. Think find

Justin:gonna keep going. This is nice. I mean, it's a pretty esoterik centric show except for my first track, and this one is also a band that I can't believe hasn't made it on the show yet. And it's one of the very it's I think it might be the very last thing they released under their original name before and then they only put out one thing after with another name. And quite possibly one of my favorite things they ever released and really goes, this is my dream summer track.
Justin:So I'm gonna play it, it's gonna be hard to follow this one for sure.
Jakub:Oh, gee. Insane. That was amazing.

Justin:that is the Boredoms and 10 remixed by Lindstrom off of Super Roots 10, the last album they released as the Boredoms. And it's pretty awesome because a little known fact about the song is there's a Godspeed song that's exactly the same length. And if you play them at the same time

Justin:End of summer?
Leon:Yeah. I'm not sure that it that
Justin:it was on. Think it was. But it but it's it was an EP that came out beforehand, I think. And the the the thing with this record and the boredoms is, like, era defining music that it felt like everybody else was playing catch up to. Like Yeah.
Justin:It there were, like, a 100 bands trying to put out a board in the record that that were doing great Yeah. Stuff, but, like, that I loved and evolving it or but, like and same thing with this record. Like, this just defines something that everyone else tried to do for Yeah. The varying degrees of success, like some really exceptionally good stuff and some really mediocre stuff and some stuff that kind of evolved and yeah. But so so era defining.
Justin:Like, I'm just like that that puts me in that time and space so deeply. But it doesn't sound dated either. Like, it's super fresh super fresh sounding. Even though it's like super max MSP and whatever, like, it it feels really, really fresh still in a way that a lot of that other stuff doesn't.
Leon:Absolutely. Yeah. I I stumbled across a used copy recently, so was reacquainted with it and was very happy to to hear it again. And, yeah, it's it still sounds fresh. I mean, we've we've heard a million a million versions of this kind of formula, and I personally don't think that anything comes close.
Jakub:No. No. Nothing. Nothing. Yeah.
Jakub:Don't know if you remember, Justin. We were at Victoriaville at one point, and I remember I was standing with Justin and and then I'm looking in the distant like a distance and like, hey, Justin. I think that's Finesse back back in the distance there coming towards us. And you could see him get his sunglasses and his hair was waving in the air and he had his jacket and he looked like really like a million bucks. And then right behind him, he saw someone kind of coming out and there's Sam Shalabi in his huge letter and like cigarette in his mouth.
Jakub:And it was the best image of two
Justin:musicians. Yeah. I'm about to play with Sam. No. Gonna get somewhere at home
Leon:for sure.
Jakub:It was pretty pretty great. So
Justin:It is it is funny, though, because I definitely have, after Niche, have a have a very different read of Austrians because to me, Austrians were all, like, finesse and very polished and stuff. Sam's actually more Austrian than than than
Jakub:Than finesse. Than
Justin:Yeah. And was that was hilarious. I remember that moment so quick. Yeah. Yeah.
Justin:Yeah. I can
Leon:say I have it I I
Jakub:have it in my head. It's just like, you know, it's really like it's like James Bond coming towards you and then there's sexuality. Sexuality.

Justin:It's a perfect perfect moment. That's great. There's that one other track that I wanna find for the show so badly, and they're somehow married in my brain even though they're very different. And it's the it's gate off the lavender head

And they they they post, like, just forgotten stuff or unheard of stuff sometimes. And they posted a Japanese hardcore seven inch from the eighties by a band called Gas. And the artwork looks exactly like Wow. A gas cover.
Leon:I'm I'm looking it up right now.

Justin:That became too many people have done it. You know, it's the terrible thing that happens where Yeah.
Jakub:Sure.
Justin:It degrades through time because so many people are copying the thing that you're like, you can't even hear the original anymore. Like, it's that that a little bit. But Yeah. I mean, you guys might still love it. I was just kinda like, oh, I'd love this a lot more than I remember.

Jakub:It's really beautiful. And I've never heard of like, I've never heard of this person before. And it's really really nice. So that was Delkash, who's an Iranian diva, and the song is called Bekhanaram Benching. And I I realized embarrassingly that I never really listened to Iranian music before.
Jakub:Really, I always thought Iranian music was like Arabic music. And yet it it sounds like Greek music. It sounds like Turkish music. It sounds like Arabic music. It sounds like all these cultures put together and it's just this mixture of something so unique sounding.
Jakub:It's really it was like a revelation to me really listening to this stuff.
Leon:It's beautiful. What a voice.

Justin:Yeah. Yeah, it was making me think of Mina a little bit actually. Different
Jakub:different register, but yeah. Yeah. It's beautiful. Totally got the lullaby feel so I'm ready for bed.

Jakub:But yeah, really a nice discovery for me. Always thought it's like, oh, it's just more Arabic music. It's like Lebanese, Arabic, It's really different. And then, wow, it's totally different. It's amazing.
